All happiness depends on a healthy breakfast! The Gourmet has always believed that a good hearty breakfast will surely have one smiling all day long.

This particular morning thanks to some coaxing by a dear friend she got up at 6.30 am and ventured for the annual Jacob’s walk which was held in celebration of American writer Jane Jacobs. Read the entire details here- http://www.janejacobswalk.org/get-involved/go-on-a-walk/

The walk started from Gai Wadi in Girgaum, through the quaint old village of Khotachiwadi and scouting through bazaars and chawls in Bhuleshwar, we finished off with a Breakfast at Vinay Health Home.

Vinay Health Home, an iconic maharashtrian place is located in a hustling bustling noisy lane. It was started way back in 1940 and is now run by the third generation of the Tembe family. The owners are friendly and very proud of their food culture which they have preserved over a period of 72 years! Vinay Health Home is divided into AC and non AC areas. The AC hall has about a capacity of 50 people which is great for the scorching Mumbai summer. A little brief about the history of this place was given by the owners as we awaited our breakfast. One noteworthy pointer to mention is that they have maintained good hygiene standards and the place is very clean. The name is a misnomer as all the popular foods are fried. This place has been a favorite of mill workers, famous politicians, theater actors and film stars who frequent it for the Puneri Misal and other authentic maharashtrian fare.

A quick look at what we gobbled and how it fared.

Kothimbir Vadi – A patty like layered snack made of chickpea flour, coriander, green chili and crushed peanuts. The Kothimbir Vadi was fried yet totally non-oily which was quite surprising.

Sabudana Vada -Wonderfully crispy and yet non oily, it is served with two chutneys. This is highly recommended.

The Misal Pav – This spicy concoction with a hint of sweetness from jaggery consists of a generous helping of sprouts, chopped peanuts, chivda, lime and coriander. It is served with buttered pav. They also do a Jain version of the same. However the spice addicts might not appreciate the slight sweetness in the misal.

Kokam Sherbet– When served, this was quite highly concentrated. After diluting it with half a glass of water, it was perfect.

Piyush – This is a liquid avatar of Shrikhand and is quite sweet with flavors of nutmeg and cardamom powder sure to linger in your senses for a while. This one was a bit too sweet though.

Although famous for traditional Maharashtrian fare, they also serve Sandwiches, some South Indian fare as well as Milk Shakes and Fresh Juices.

Gourmet’s final verdict – Places like these need love. I almost turned a Marathi Mulgi savoring the food here.

Will we gobble here again? – The prices are dirt cheap yet offer you some traditional tasty maharashtrian fare. The service is efficient and quick. The owners seem really passionate about the place and the cuisine  that they have to offer. We surely will return.
