photo 4Gobble Diaries just got a firangi tadka! Our gourmet got a chance to meet RACHEL ALLEN! Yes THE Rachel Allen who has made us drool in front of our television sets. She has been a huge fan of Rachel Allen since long and this meet and greet was organized by FBAI and was held at Sassy Spoon, Nariman Point.

Gourmet with the lady herself – Rachel Allen!

Now if you don’t know who Rachel Allen is, she and her TV shows are loved worldwide. Rachel Allen’s Bake and Rachel Allen’s Easy Meals are most beloved in India too. A successful cookbook author, she is best known for her cooking which is easy to follow and focuses on simple ingredients. She is a frequent guest on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and is one of the presenters on the Good Food Channel Market Kitchen show. She is quite the entrepreneur too having her own line of products for Tipperary Crystal.

Rachel was in India on a trip to work for the charitable organization – ‘GOAL’. After traveling to Delhi and Kolkata, she came to Mumbai to host a charity event at The Sassy Spoon. A piece of trivia – The owner of Sassy Spoon who also happens to be a Rachel is an alumnus of Ballymaloe cookery school which is founded by Rachel Allen’s mother in law Darina Allen. It was good to see the guru-shishya join hands for a gastronomic cause.

Rachel was on a six day tour where her plan was to visit several GOAL projects, including a programme for families living and working at some of the city’s municipal dump sites.

In the Sassy Spoon, the menu features Allen’s recipes with a little tweaking by Chef Irfan Pabaney. A special four-course menu has been devised that draws inspiration from her local cuisine for the restaurant’s Rachel Allen Week.

We got to meet her, ask questions about the organization GOAL, her love of food and the inspirations behind them. Yes! There will be photos clicked when a celebrity chef meets a foodie. Everyone clicked pics with her looking star stuffed. The event rounded off with gobbling on some cookies and macrons. Later in the evening a charity dinner was scheduled at the Sassy Spoon, all the proceeds of which went towards the charitable institute GOAL.

It’s an absolutely inexplicable feeling when you get to meet the person you have admired for so long. Our gourmet happened to mention that her mom has been a huge fan of Rachel Allen. Rachel warmly wished her mom and thanked her for those kind words. Rachel is as warm as she appears on the television, maybe even better in person. Our gourmet is probably a bigger fan of her now.
