Pizza Express – The Chef’s Table

24th June 2014

Just say ‘Last Slice of the Pizza’ and if you’ll  see two individuals battling it out for the last gobble, they are probably the Gourmand and the Gourmet. The Pizza hungry demons inside them danced when the Gourmet won the Chef’s Table for three at Pizza Express, Andheri, the newest outlet in Times Square building. Pizza Express is quite the place to be if one craves for scrumptious thin pizzas. Our Chefs table comprised of about 10 people who all won through activities conducted by Pizza Express on different social media platforms.

Chef Soham was the man of the day who took us through a journey of Pizza Express and their secrets. Some exciting steps that went behind in keeping the dough fresh and the steps it undergoes before it the dons the glamorous avatar in the form of those lovely pizzas were nicely told. Pizza Express uses tomato sauce that is exclusively imported from Italy. Even their source of wheat is a guarded secret. No wonder these well kept secrets produce the best pizzas that there are. An interactive session ensued while we munched on the warm dough balls and Ramiro Al Forno.

Dough balls

Though plain jane by looks, these dough balls are a hot favorite ! Soft and fluffy complimented by the butter and pesto sauces as dips. The Ramiro Al Forno is basically red peppers stuffed with goat cheese and mozzarella with some mushrooms and a balsamic syrup glaze to give it that lovely flavour. Cheese lovers would totally admire this creation !

The chef showed how the pizzas are made – how they hand stretch the dough and toss it just before it is baked with the sauce and topping. It is quite fascinating to actually witness  what goes in making the pizzas. Iin the most animated fashion, the pizza base is tossed in the air. Yes! That’s done to every pizza and its quite the appealing visual art.

photo 4We all gobbled on the pizzas after the demo. The  Pomodoro Pesto Pizza– thin crust pizza with cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and the mozzarella cheese. A drizzle of garlic oil and there you have a winner! Love how with a few ingredients this one manages to delight a hard core non vegetarian. Our gourmand had 3 slices of these and still wanted more! The Apollo Pizza which is created exclusively for the spice loving India has chunks of tandoori chicken, green chillies, yellow peppers to satiate  the inner desi pizza lover in you. Padana Pizza for the fancy souls – goat chesse, mozzarella, spinach, caramelized onion and a slight drizzle of olive oil. There’s a slight sweetness to this one because of the caramelized onions but the combination works really well. The chef also served us a pasta with a creamy white sauce which we don’t remember the name of since we didn’t look it up in the menu. They surely serve the pasta Al-Dente but overall nothing to exciting about it. It could well be because we did stuff ourselves with a LOT of pizza.

No matter how much we eat we, there is always a cache reserve  for desserts! We were served the Vanilla Cheesecake and the Chocolate Fudge Cake. The Cheesecake is lovely. A simple baked cheesecake which is comfort in every bite. Every bite was suffixed with a word of appreciation. The Chocolate Fudge cake was quite good too. The Andheri East branch unfortunately does not have the liquor license yet so we did not eat any of the Tiramisu.

We were in for a much better surprise after the meal. We were told that we would be making our own pizzas and taking them home. We were given basic ingredients for toppings, dough, sauces and all that goes into their pizzas. We managed a lovely pizza by spanking and flaring the dough and having such a good time doing this we hope we could do this each time we visit pizza express.

Our pizza !

A supremely fun experience at Pizza Express ! Chef Soham and the wonder team made us love pizzas even more.

Pizza Express launched a special summer menu comprising of some refreshing summery drinks, new pizzas, salads and a special dessert – The  Mango Cheesecake. But When Gourmet visited Pizza Express again, this was unavailable. It would be worthwhile to try these summery drinks. Tried the Mango Fresca, Berry Fresca and the Sunrise Iced Tea. Mango Fresca resembles the Aam and Gourmet sure loved it.
